3 Ways to Encourage Your Child as They Go Back to School

Summer is coming to an end, and as a parent, that can only mean one thing; back to school! Encouraging your children as they head back to the classroom can not only make for an easier transition but also will enhance their experience at school all year round.

  1. Come Up with a Game Plan

And do it together! Discuss your expectations, but keep them positive. Focus on past accomplishments and triumphs from the year before, and encourage them by reminding them of their wins. Tackle goals for the upcoming year, whether that be making the honor roll, trying out for the soccer team, or branching out and making new friends. It may also be helpful to ask them what skills they would like to improve upon this year and establish some goals based upon that. Ask what motivates them. It can be as simple as that!

2. Establish a Routine

No one likes to wake up early, especially teens and tweens. Slowly integrating an earlier bedtime back into their schedule about two weeks before the school year starts can help ease them into an earlier wake-up. Even planning to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner around the same times that they’d be eating during the school week can help them adjust to their new schedules.

3. Keep Passions in Action

Every child has something that they love. Maybe they even picked up a new hobby over the summer. Whatever it is, encourage them to continue to explore what brings them joy. Does your son love music? Encourage him to enroll in a music elective or

to start a guitar club at school. Maybe your daughter spent the summer making up dance routines with her friends. Talk to her about trying out for her school’s dance team. Integrating your child’s hobbies with school can help motivate them and give them something to look forward to each day.
