5 Things Every Parent of Kids with Special Needs Should Hear

Being a parent is hard. When your child has special needs, being a parent can feel even harder. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget what a superhero you are. But in case you do, here’s your reminder.

  1. You are Not Alone

Although parenting a child with special needs comes with its own unique challenges, there are other parents like you out there that are facing similar ones. Find them, become a part of that community, and you will come across tons of support and valuable friendships built upon these shared experiences.

2. You Don’t Have to Be Perfect

No parent is! We all make mistakes, even with the best of intentions. Mistakes are simply opportunities to learn and grow. You will figure out what works best for you and your child over time, through trial and error. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Most of the time, there is no “right” answer; just what is right for you and your family.

3. Celebrate the Wins

Big or small! Growth is growth, and achievement is an achievement. That deserves to be recognized! Celebrate with your child, your family, your friends. Share your successes with the people that you love.

4. Don’t Forget to Enjoy Time Spent with Your Child

You’re busy. You’re over-scheduled and over-extended. But even when everything feels like a chore, an errand, or just another appointment, remember that time spent with your child is special. Make time to play, to laugh, to simply just enjoy your time with them. Your smile lights up their world just as much as theirs lights up yours.

5. Remember to Make Time for Yourself Too

You are constantly caring for others, but you also deserve to be cared for. Making time for yourself is just as important as making time for your child. Don’t forget about what brings you joy! Caring for yourself will only make you better at caring for others.
